Overview

Revival is a mobile application that makes skin and hair care much easier. It regularly collects and organizes in one place all the information you need (treatment methods, products catalogue, tips and advices, etc.).

Challenges

Skin and hair care are very important, especially when dealing with acne or hair loss. Unfortunately searching for information online is very time-consuming and sometimes can make more damage than good.

Main goal

Creating an user-friendly app that helps users solve their skin and hair problems, facilitates their daily care and collects the necessary information based on their needs.

RESEARCH

User Interviews

In order to discover new problems I have conducted online research. I focused on areas where I would need help myself. Then user interviews helped me to get the big picture of those problems and identify their importance.

Conclusions:

There are many apps for tracking habits such as taking supplements, skin and hair care or drinking water. However, there isn't one that does everything at once, along with analysing cosmetics and substances, recommending additional products and teaching users what skincare should look like and why particular product ingredients are (not) good for them. This app would make everyday life a lot easier - it often happens that in the rush of responsibilities you forget about your resolutions, so something to remind you of them is necessary.

Problem areas: analysing ingredients, finding and choosing cosmetics and care, finding the right cosmetic substitute, finding out whether cosmetics can be combined with each other and whether they are suitable for the chosen care, instructions for application, use of cosmetics, assessing your skin and hair type.

"I'd like to start conscious skin care, but I was discouraged by the amount of information that I had to absorb at once. I think that something that would introduce a layman to the method step by step would be really useful."

"Do you know any app that analyses ingredients of cosmetics? Ideally, you could take a photo and it would explain everything. It would be much easier to buy products without searching on the internet for each separate ingredient."

"A friend of mine is pregnant and has a big problem because she doesn't know if she should avoid any ingredients in her care products. Can ingredients in cosmetics have bad effects on the foetus / baby? "

"Is there any mobile app that helps to embrace hair care? It would be nice to be able to enter a collection of beauty products with expire dates and add photos after using them - after washing and after a few hours."

"I'm about to start conscious face care, but don't know where to start. I don't have any major skin problems. I'm wondering how my daily routine should look like. The biggest problem for me is the choice of creams."

"Choosing the right cosmetics can be tedious, especially when the igredients don't look. Do you know any mobile app that on the basis of the name / barcode translate the composition and list harmful ingredients?"

Competitor analysis

This method helped me to compare other free "beauty" apps available in the market and realize what important app features are lacking. Users' opinions were the ground for inferring the usefulness of these apps.

"The scanner is just guessing. I didn't expect much from it, but when the scanner doesn't pick up the red blemishes as spots or picks up the eyebrows as wrinkles (when I deliberately furrowed my brow). It's a good tracker app for self guidance, but that's about it. I tried the scanner at least 15 times..."

"It doesn't work. No matter what I do it won't upload any photos of either my face or products. I have tried with a new account and reinstalling. Nothing makes this app work. It's too bad, it seems like exactly what I wanted."

"I think this app is really amazing. It helps me to understand the type of skin and a lot more. It doesn't have a load of ads too."

"I only had 7 free scans and then it asked me to pay. It looks like it is still being developed, for example there was only "shampoo" and "mask" in available categories. I was expecting to see more variety so I could categorize my products into their types."

"Amazing app! Worth every penny. I wish I could add some ingredients manually if the camera can't read it."

"I love this app. I can quickly scan the label and it breaks down the ingredients. The only thing I don't like is when it says it has controversial ingredients for the curly girl method, I'm not sure if they are the ones marked red?"

EMPATHISE

4 Ws

Who is experiencing the problem?

The problem affects people for whom beauty is important, both men and women who consciously pay attention to daily skin and hair care. Often these people experience or have experienced skin/hair problems, making proper care very important to them - they fear the return of certain problems as a result of non-compliance with care principles.

What is the problem?

The problem is choosing the right care, products and keeping track of care. In addition, it is difficult to analyse the ingredients of products, remember their expiry dates and use them correctly. There are too many products and methods, which result in increasing questions and new responsibilities.

Where / When does the problem present itself?

This problem arises practically every day - regularity in care is very important. Equally important is the moment of buying a new product, when the user is unsure about the composition and effects of the product.

Why does it matter?

This problem should be solved to make life easier for users. Problems with the skin or with hair loss can cause considerable psychological discomfort and are often solved by appropriate and systematic treatment. This solution would make it possible to get rid of the growing frustration caused by a lack of sufficient information.

5 Whys

Problem: choosing the right care, products and keeping track of care. In addition, it is difficult to analyse the composition of products, remember their expiry dates and use them correctly.

Why? There is too much information, which an inexperienced and unfamiliar person is not able to analyse.

Why? Because of the ever increasing range of cosmetics and methods on the market.

Why? Companies pay attention to the trends among consumers and that they're more and more ecoaware.

Why? Consumers are more conscious about the environment, health, lifestyle.

Why? Certain lifestyle patterns have emerged, mainly promoted on the Internet, which users want to follow.

DEFINE & STRATEGY

Personas

Based on the research I developed two personas: Emma and Charles. It helped me deepen my empathy for the people affected by the problem I want to solve.

Problem statement

I am a busy student. I try to bring regularity into my life, but due to the amount of responsibilities I forget to take care of myself because I want to do as much as possible towards my career to achieve success in the future. This makes me feel stressed, disappointed, frustrated and worried.

I am a busy corporate employee. I try to be well-groomed and look good, but I don't know where to start because there are too many cosmetics and treatments available. This makes me feel overwhelmed with information and discouraged from taking care of myself.

IDEATE

Brand book

After defining the problem, I decided to create a mobile app. I named it Revival, created a logo and prepared a brand book with guidelines, which I used to UI design.

User journey map

I decided to create a customer journey map for Charles to see possible scenarios of using the app. This made it easier for me to design information architecture.

User flow

I created this User flow to show how users travel through the app while performing a specific task.

PROTOTYPE

Wireframing

After sketching various designs, I was finally able to structure the user flow. Then I created lo-fi wireframes with Adobe XD and conducted several user test.

Revival.jpg

Prototyping

In order to test the flow of a design solution and gather feedback on it, I created hi-fi screens (Polish and English version) of the app with Adobe XD and Illustrator. Then I created the prototype using Marvel App.

TEST & VALIDATE

User tests

I conducted informal user testing with the prototype and received informative feedback. I displayed this prototype to ten participants individually. User testing highlighted the top risks in the product to be:

1. Too many questions in the questionnaire.

2. Avilability of recommended products on different markets.

cted several user test.

 What I learned

Revival was my first project that helped me put all the knowledge I gained from UX design courses into practice. I set myself a deadline and this gave me opportunity to see how I deal with stressful situations. Moreover, I noticed the importance of asking users for their opinions. Their feedback made almost every step easier. Valuable were not only users', but also other designers' comments. Apart from that, I learned a lot about skin and hair care.
